Do you have a noisy fan on your Sony Vaio laptop?

Is the Fan constantly running at full speed?

If you would like to reduce the fan speed on your Sony Vaio laptop - running on windows XP, without causing any harm to the laptop itself, then the solution below may help. This solution will set the fan speed to an adaptive mode, meaning the fan will only run at full speed when labour intensive work is being carried out on the laptop, such as accessing several webpages while running other programs on the laptop.

Should you only be doing small tasks that require less CPU usage, the fan will settle down into a quieter mode - Adaptive! Simply put the laptop or rather the processor will adapt to the amount of pressure/labour being put on it and run the fan accordingly.

Setting Adaptive mode

To set your laptop (running windows XP) to adaptive mode do the following:

  1. Click Start in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.
  2. Click/Open Control Panel
  3. Click/Open Power Options
  4. In the Power Options window click the 'VAIO Power Management' tab
  5. Click the Advanced button at the bottom of the VAIO Power Management tab
  6. Check the box Enable VAIO Power Management if not already checked then click OK
  7. You should now be able to access the 'Settings for VAIO Optimized power scheme' on the VAIO Power Management tab
  8. Under the list of Items you should see an item called 'System - CPU Control'. Click the small arrow in the 'Plugged in' column and choose 'Adaptive' from the drop-down menu
  9. Click 'Apply' then 'OK'
  10. Restart your laptop

Most Sony VAIO laptops come with the Power setting set for Performance, often causing the fan to run at full speed - most of the time, which is really unnecessary. I have set several VAIO laptops to Adaptive mode over the years without any noticable change in performance, and the resulting reduction in noise has been an absolute blessing.

Your fix for reducing the noise of the fan of my Sony Vaio worked a treat. It does not stop the vaio fan noise completely but it does reduce it by a lot when there is no heavy load on the system.
