FarmVille is a social network farming game developed by Zynga. The game is available through the social-networking website Facebook and also as an App on the Apple iPhone. To play the game one needs to be a member of Facebook. Farmville allows Facebook members to manage a virtual farm, plowing land, growing crops, planting, harvesting etc with virtual crops and raising livestock. FarmVille started as a clone of the popular Farm Town, which also featured on Facebook back in June 2009. Farmville has seen a massive growth in users and has since grown to be Facebook's most popular application - with over 63 million active users around the world and over 25 million Facebook app fans as of the end of 2010. Over 10% of Facebook's users play it! Despite its popularity and according to its creators - Zynga, Farmville is still classed as being in a "Beta Stage" or "Testing Stage", with all players considered as being Testers."

On February 4, 2010, Microsoft's MSN Games also launched FarmVille on its website, requiring anyone wishing to play the game to have a Facebook account and not needing a Windows Live ID.

Playing the game

When starting a farm, players must first creates an avatar - which may be changed at any time. Player start with an empty farm and a fixed amount of starting "farm coins" - the main currency in the game. Players can also earn "Experience Points" for performing certain actions in the game such as buying items or plowing land. At certain 'experience point' benchmarks, a player's level will rise. As players gains more items and progresses through levels of the game, other items such as animals and crops become available via the "market". Items can be purchased from the market using either farm coins or "farm cash". Farm cash is earned by levelling up, microtransactions or completing offers.

Crops

Harvesting 'Crops' is the main way players earns their 'farm coins'. Players do this by paying coins for plowing a unit of land and planting crops on it, after a certain amount of time has elapsed the crop may be harvested. The length of time it takes for a crop to grow and the amount of money a crop could possibly yield when it is harvested depends on the crop planted and its entry time in the "market" dialog. Should a crop run over the specified time they will wither and start to die or they will be of no use. The amount of time is equal to 2.5 times the amount of time taken to grow the crop. Example: A crop taking 8 hours to grow will wither after 2.5 × 8 = 20 hours. However, players may use farm cash to purchase withered crops to rejuvenate them or can use a biplane to fly over with some "instant grow" which will cause the crop to be immediately available for harvest. A Biplane is purchased using coins and this special feature is only available for farm cash. As a player's level goes up more, crops with a higher payout become available.

Animals and other plants

Players may also receive or purchase livestock, trees and bushes from friends, for example Chickens or Cherry Trees which do not wither, instead they become ready for harvest for preset amounts of money a set amount of time from their last harvest. Trees and livestock cannot die and can not be stopped from harvesting.

Social interaction

Like most Zynga games, FarmVille incorporates the social networking aspect of Facebook into many areas of gameplay. Players may invite their friends to be their neighbours, allowing them to perform five actions on each other's farms per day by "visiting" it. Neighbors may also send gifts and supplies to each other, complete specialized tasks together for rewards, and join "co-ops" - joint efforts to grow a certain amount of certain crops.

Gifts

Neighbours may also send gifts to each other in the form of mystery gifts with expensive, but random items, special deliveries with building supplies, or by choosing a particular item to send. They cost the sending user nothing.

Decorations

Decorations can be purchased in the market for coins or cash or can be sent in the form of free gifts. Decorations include many items like buildings, hay bales, fences, nutcrackers, gnomes, flags, topiaries, etc. There are sometimes limited edition items depending on the theme such as a Valentine's Day theme, halloween theme, winter theme, etc. Decorations also give 'experience points' depending on the cost.

Ads

Farmville runs ad campaigns (in-game) allowing users to visit other company's farms and buy or receive items with their logos and colors. For example: users could get free McDonalds hot air balloons, McCafe products, and the ability to visit McDonalds' farm. Farmville also offers advertising where users can interact with a brand in exchange for free farm cash through an ad platform.
